The rules in the city

The Greer Police Department’s animal regulations say:

  1. All dogs within the city limits must be on a leash held by a person.
  2. Pets other than service animals are not allowed at events in the city or at a city park during organized play or practice.
  3. A dog can be licensed by the city only with proof of a current rabies vaccination.

Away from your own property, you must promptly pick up after your animal, bag it and put it in a public trash can or your own; feces may not go in storm or sanitary drains. The full text is in Chapter 10 of the city code.

Lakes

Greer CPW’s Lake Robinson (2544 Mays Bridge Road) and Lake Cunningham (2844 N. McElhaney Road) are open sunrise to sunset. Under CPW’s lake rules:

  • pets must be leashed and under control at all times
  • pets are not allowed in the public shelter or any area next to a picnic table
  • owners must clean up after them

The lakes are drinking-water reservoirs, and the rules restrict wading, bathing and swimming; read them before letting a dog near the water.

Dog park

The City of Greer’s list of parks does not include a dog park. The nearest public one is at Greenville County Rec’s Pavilion Recreation Complex, 400 Scottswood Road, Taylors, which lists a dog park along with a walking trail, playgrounds and an ice rink. County Rec: 864-288-6470.

Dog swim days

At the end of each summer, Greenville County Rec opens its waterparks to dogs for Waggin’ at the Waterpark. In 2026 it was Sept. 12 at Discovery Island in Simpsonville and Sept. 19 at Otter Creek in Greenville, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with time slots by dog size, according to the county’s event page. In 2025 registration was $36 ($45 out of county) and required proof of rabies, parvo and bordetella vaccinations. Watch for 2027 dates in summer.

Patios and businesses

Whether a restaurant patio or shop allows dogs is up to each business; ask before you sit down. Service animals are allowed at city events and in public places.
