This week

  • State roads and I-85: As of Monday, 511SC lists no construction work zones on I-85, Wade Hampton Boulevard (US 29), SC 14, SC 101 or SC 290 in or around Greer. SCDOT’s Upstate work zones on the list this week are on I-26 near Clinton, not near Greer.
  • City streets: We could not confirm city street closures for this week. The City of Greer’s news list and Engineering pages did not load for us on Nov. 2, and Greenville County’s road closures page was also unreachable. Check the city’s news list or call Public Services at 864-848-2184 before you go.
  • Crashes and short closures can appear at any hour. Check 511sc.org or dial 511 before you drive.

Greer’s main roads are a mix of state highways, kept by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), and city streets, kept by the City of Greer. Wade Hampton Boulevard (US 29), SC 14, SC 101, SC 290 and I-85 belong to the state. Before you drive, check 511SC (or dial 511) for live crashes, lane closures and work zones on state roads.

State projects in and near Greer

These are the SCDOT projects listed for the Greer area on the agency’s project portal, checked Nov. 2. None has a construction date:

Project What SCDOT says Status

US 29 Corridor Safety Project in Greenville Changes to Wade Hampton Boulevard from Karen Drive to East Lee Road Proposed
I-85 Corridor Study Planning study of 35 miles and 18 interchanges from US 29 (Exit 34) to SC 85 (Exit 69) Study in 2026; no construction scheduled

The three US 29 projects together cover most of Wade Hampton Boulevard between Greenville and Greer. SCDOT’s project pages carry maps, public meeting materials and a feedback form.

SCDOT announced the I-85 study on Dec. 5, 2025. It has not yet posted public meeting dates. The agency said it will use traffic data, modeling and public input to find options for current and future congestion and safety problems along the corridor. Its partners include the Greenville-Pickens Area Transportation Study, the Spartanburg Area Transportation Study, the Appalachian Council of Governments, GSP International Airport and the South Carolina Ports Authority.

City projects

Transportation Safety Action Plan. The city is drawing up a plan to cut serious-injury and deadly crashes, paid for by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program. The consultants’ findings and crash map show that 44% of dangerous crashes in Greer are angle crashes, 28% are lane departures and 13% are rear-end crashes, according to the city’s Oct. 8 announcement. The city held a public open house on the plan at City Hall on Oct. 22. It has not yet posted a recap or a date for the draft plan.

Road preservation. Since 2022 the Engineering Department has treated city streets with two asphalt sealants, Reclamite and HA5, to make the pavement last longer, according to its Roads and Traffic page. The latest round of Reclamite spraying in city neighborhoods ended Oct. 22, and some city streets are set to be fully repaved in spring 2027, the city said.

Speed humps. The city’s traffic calming policy covers two-lane residential streets posted at 35 mph or less. An application needs signatures from five households; if a five-day traffic study qualifies the street, 65% of property owners must sign a petition before construction. City Council sets aside money for speed humps each year.

What this means for you

  • No state work zone is listed for Greer this week, so I-85 and Wade Hampton Boulevard delays come from crashes and rush-hour traffic. Check 511SC before you leave.
  • SCDOT’s US 29 safety work is still a proposal. Watch the project pages for meeting dates.
  • Have a dangerous intersection in mind? Read the transportation safety findings and our story on the plan.
  • Report a pothole to the city or SCDOT depending on who owns the road.
