Trash inside Greer city limits is picked up once a week by Meridian Waste, the city’s contractor, on a Monday-through-Friday route schedule. The City of Greer Public Services Department runs the program, sells the carts and collects yard debris. Greer has had no curbside recycling since Aug. 1, 2022; recyclables go to the city’s drop-off convenience center on Buncombe Street.

Who to call

  • Public Services (missed pickup, carts, yard debris): 864-848-2184 or 864-848-2182, public-services@cityofgreersc.gov
  • Convenience Center: 315 Buncombe St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, closed Sunday
  • City Hall: 301 E. Poinsett St., 864-848-2150

If you live outside the city limits in unincorporated Greenville or Spartanburg County, the city does not collect your trash. You hire a private hauler or use the county’s convenience centers.

Your pickup day and the rules for the cart

The city gives each home a green rollout cart stamped “City of Greer.” It is for household garbage only. If you do not know your day, call Public Services at 864-848-2184. On collection day, the city’s trash page says:

  • Put the cart at the curb, not in the street, by 7 a.m., and no earlier than 7:30 p.m. the night before.
  • Face the front toward the street, with the hinges and wheels toward the house.
  • Keep it clear of fences, mailboxes and parked cars.
  • Bring it back in by 7 p.m.
  • Keep the lid closed. Between pickups, store the cart beside or behind the house.

Not allowed in the cart: acids, caustics, poisons, petroleum products, construction materials such as concrete, lumber and bricks, and yard waste (grass, leaves, limbs, sod or soil).

Carts: a replacement or second cart costs $75; a yard waste cart costs $55. Send the city’s cart form to Public Services by email. Report a damaged or stolen cart right away at 864-848-2184.

Help at the house: a resident who is physically unable to roll the cart to the curb, with no one at home able to do it, can get “at the house” service. Call Public Services with proof.

Holiday schedule for 2026

Meridian Waste observes five holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. When one falls on a weekday, routes after it run one day late for the rest of the week, according to the city’s 2026 holiday collection schedule. A holiday on a weekend changes nothing.

Holiday Date What changes
Columbus Day Monday, Oct. 12 No change
Veterans Day Wednesday, Nov. 11 No change
Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 26 Thursday routes on Friday; Friday routes on Saturday
Christmas Friday, Dec. 25 Friday routes on Saturday
New Year’s Day Friday, Jan. 1, 2027 Friday routes on Saturday

The city has also posted its 2027 collection schedule.

Recycling: the Buncombe Street convenience center

The City of Greer Convenience Center at 315 Buncombe St. is staffed by Meridian Waste six days a week: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. It is closed Sunday.

Accepted: paper, aluminum and steel cans, automobile tires, corrugated cardboard, e-waste, household batteries, oil and antifreeze, plastic, and residential construction and demolition materials.

Not accepted: glass, car or other large batteries, chemicals, paint and paint thinner, brush and leaves, household garbage, old lawn mowers and vehicles.

The city explains why it stopped curbside recycling on the same page: it paid $75 a ton to dispose of recyclables against a maximum of $41 a ton for trash. The city also keeps a map of Greenville and Spartanburg County recycling centers.

Yard waste and bulk limbs

  • Bagged yard waste: grass, small hedge trimmings and leaves (outside the fall leaf season) must be in lawn and leaf bags of no more than 39 gallons.
  • Limbs and brush: up to about one truckload, roughly 8 cubic yards, is collected at the curb weekly. Limbs must be no longer than 6 feet and no thicker than 6 inches. Pile them neatly with the cut ends one way.
  • Not collected: soil, sod and other excavated material, and trees a homeowner cuts, tops or removes. A contractor working for you hauls away its own debris.

Loose leaf collection

Public Services collects loose leaf piles at the curb from Nov. 2, 2026, through Feb. 5, 2027, in set weeks for each of four areas, according to the city’s 2026-27 leaf collection brochure. Area 1 starts Nov. 2, Area 2 Nov. 9, Area 3 Nov. 16 and Area 4 Nov. 23. Every area’s dates and a guide to the areas are in our leaf pickup story. Put the pile out on the first morning of your area’s window. Piles must hold only leaves. Sticks, rocks, brush and trash can damage the equipment, and crews will not collect mixed piles. Questions: 864-848-2182 or 864-848-2184.

What this means for you

  • Thanksgiving week: a Thursday or Friday route runs one day late.
  • Save glass for a county center; the Buncombe Street site does not take it.
  • Rake leaves to the curb only when your area’s dates are posted.
