Who you call when the lights go out in Greer depends on who sends your electric bill. Most of the city gets power from Greer CPW (the Greer Commission of Public Works), the city-owned utility that also runs water, sewer and natural gas. CPW’s electric service area is mainly inside the city limits, so some homes with a Greer address get power from another utility, such as Duke Energy or an electric cooperative. Your bill names your provider.

Greer CPW customers
Greer CPW provides electric service to about 26,000 customers, mainly inside Greer’s city limits plus some nearby unincorporated areas, according to its Electricity page. Its power comes through the Piedmont Municipal Power Agency, a group of 10 municipal electric utilities in the northern part of South Carolina, with portions from the Catawba Nuclear Station, Santee Cooper and federal hydroelectric projects. Not sure whether CPW can serve an address? Use the Service Availability tool on the same page.
To report an outage, Greer CPW says the fastest way is to log in to your online account and select “report an outage.” You can also call 864-848-5500. Its main office is at 301 McCall St.
To follow an outage, CPW posts significant outages on its Current Utility Outages page and its Facebook page, and uses an automated calling system to alert customers in an emergency. Make sure your phone number is current in the customer portal so the calls reach you.
Duke Energy customers
If Duke Energy bills you, report an outage by calling 800-769-3766 (800-POWERON), texting OUT to 57801, or using the Duke Energy app or the online outage map, according to the company. Text REG to 57801 to register your phone and STATUS to get updates on an outage you have already reported.
Electric cooperative members
South Carolina’s electric cooperatives post outages on a shared statewide map run by the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, which lists each co-op’s reporting number on its outage numbers page. The co-ops ask members to report every outage themselves and not assume a neighbor has.
Gas leaks and water problems
Greer CPW also runs the city’s natural gas system. If you smell gas, call 911 and then Greer CPW. CPW’s safety tips: do not use a telephone or flashlight, flip a light switch or light a match near the smell, and do not relight a furnace, water heater or range until the smell is gone. Get medical help right away for burns or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Water main breaks and sewer backups also go to Greer CPW at 864-848-5500, or through the service request form.
