Lyman, about 6 miles east, Greenville, about 10 miles southwest, and Mauldin, about 11 miles southwest, are the three nearest incorporated cities and towns to Greer with more than 5,000 people. Taylors, Wade Hampton and Five Forks are closer, but they are Census-designated places with no city government, so they have no city tax rate or city services to compare.
Greer is the one that straddles a county line. Most of the city is in Greenville County, like Greenville and Mauldin; the eastern part is in Spartanburg County, like Lyman. That decides which county bills your taxes and, in some neighborhoods, which school district serves you.

These are the public high schools inside each place’s limits, from the federal NCES school directory, with their overall ratings on the 2025 state report cards (the 2024-25 school year). The state’s scale runs Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average and Unsatisfactory. Attendance zones do not follow city limits, so the high school for a given address may be one not listed here.

Property taxes
Greer, Greenville and Mauldin homes in Greenville County pay the same three countywide levies, according to the Auditor’s 2025 millage sheet: 60.1 mills for Greenville County, 189.7 for Greenville County Schools and 0.3 for the arena, or 250.1 mills. The city levy is added on top.
| Place (county tax district) | City or town levy | Total mills |
|---|---|---|
| Greer (district 190) | 111.0 | 361.1 |
| Greenville (district 500) | 81.4 | 331.5 |
| Mauldin (district 794) | 53.7 | 303.8 |
| Lyman (Spartanburg County) | 60.6 | On the county levy sheet |
Greer, Greenville and Mauldin figures are for tax year 2025, the bills due Jan. 15, 2026. Lyman’s town rate is 60.6 mills for its fiscal year 2025-26, the same as the year before, according to the town’s audited financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2025. Lyman homes, and Greer homes on the Spartanburg County side, pay Spartanburg County and Spartanburg District 5 levies instead of the Greenville County ones; the county Auditor lists every total on its levy sheet, which we could not open, so those totals are not printed here.
The rules that cut a homeowner’s bill are the same in all four places because they are state law: the 4% assessment ratio for a legal residence instead of 6%, the exemption of a legal residence from school operating taxes, and the homestead exemption on the first $50,000 of value for owners who are 65 or older, disabled or legally blind. See our property taxes guide.
